HONOR ROLL OF KIA'S FROM A CO, 1/52D INF, FROM 28 FEB TO 8 MAR 69
IN THE BATTLE FOR TIEN PHUOCC

WHAT HAPPENED?

The official Americal Division's After Action Report, Lessons Learned, dated 10 May, 1969, says of my units's action during the time period:  "On 25 February, elements of the 1/52d Infantry maneuvered into attack positions SE of Tien Phuoc along the Song Bon Mier (River) in the NW sector of Base Area 117. For the next eight days, 1/52d Inf was in heavy contact with elements of the 1st and 3d Battalions, 3d Regiment, 2d NVA Division who occupied strongly fortified positions and bunker complexes on the high ground . . . On 9 March, after sustaining heavy casualties, the 1/52d Inf Battalion became OPCON to the 196th Inf Bde."

The Americal Division Newspaper published a report on Wed 5 Mar 69 that on the previous day,  "Co. A, 1/52d Inf kept pressure on enemy units for the third consecutive day 11 1/2 miles southwest of Tam Ky and killed an NVA and seven VC in three actions . . ."

*Captain Yeatts, A Company Commander during this operation, was killed in a different action when LZ Buff (later renamed LZ Stinson for our KIA Bn CO) was hit by over 200 mortars & rockets and over-run on 12 May 69.  A Company was virtually wiped out several times in Vietnam--under experienced, brave, and capable commanders.  The missions were tough, and often accomplished at high cost. Note also that LTC Stinson was not assigned to A Company, but was 1/52d Infantry Battalion Commander.
